A push for resin production caps at UN meeting

As the global plastics treaty talks prepare for a sprint to the finish in two months, countries favoring limits on resin production — including the United States — made a push on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.

At a Sept. 25 event in New York organized by the U.N., diplomats from the U.S., France and other countries said the treaty should include yet-to-be-defined limits on resin production, as well as tackle problematic plastic products and chemicals of concern in polymers.

ExxonMobil, California face off in massive suit over plastics recycling

https://www.plasticsnews.com/news/exxonmobil-california-face-massive-suit-over-plastics-recycling

California is going after ExxonMobil Corp. in a both-barrels-blazing lawsuit, attempting to lay the problems with plastics and plastics recycling at the oil giant’s feet.

But ExxonMobil Corp. is firing back, saying the state is trying to make a scapegoat out of the company.

ExxonMobil’s advice to California and state Attorney General Rob Bonta, who filed the suit Sept. 23, look in the mirror.

“For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible,” Bonta said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. “ExxonMobil lied to further its record-breaking profits at the expense of our planet and possibly jeopardizing our health.”

Resin prices stretch in every direction in August

https://www.plasticsnews.com/resin-pricing/resin-prices-stretch-every-direction-august

August saw a range of movement in North American commodity resin prices, with prices for one material up, two down and two flat.

Polypropylene was the only commodity resin to see higher prices in August. Regional prices for that material increased by an average of 2 cents per pound, marking the third consecutive monthly price hike.

The August PP increase was influenced by prices for polymer-grade propylene monomer feedstock. Regional PP prices had climbed 5 cents in July and 2 cents in June. The July hike also was tied to higher PGP prices, as well as supply concerns over brief outages caused by Hurricane Beryl, which hit the Houston area in early July.

Sorting technology improves accuracy

Sorting technology firms aim to solve challenging tasks through advances in optical systems, robotics and AI.

Recently introduced sortation technologies aim to enhance the recycling and purity of dirtier plastic waste materials with higher contamination. Advances in optical, sensor, and robotic sorting, software, and monitoring functions increase the recovery of bottles, containers, films, and foils from commingled sources, as well as regrind, flake, and pellets.

HolyGrail 2.0 technologies are successful in industrial testing

The packaging industry is buzzing with anticipation as the implementation of mandatory EU-wide rules for packaging and packaging waste draws near. A key aspect of these rules – enshrined in the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation – is the requirement to incorporate a specific percentage of recycled content in plastic packaging, necessitating a significant shift in the industry from a linear model to full circularity.

Unlocking the potential of rigid polyolefin waste

Companies in the polyolefins value chain are working to collaborate to optimize recycling of packaging items such as PP containers and PE caps and bottles.

Making the cut:  advances in granulators

Granulator manufacturers are developing their technologies in new ways that help processors deal with the challenges of using regrind material.
