Lawmakers urge Washington to cut back on single-use plastics
https://www.plasticsnews.com/public-policy/lawmakers-urge-washington-cut-back-single-use-plastics
Nearly 60 senators and members of Congress wrote President Joe Biden’s administration Sept. 22, urging it to reduce purchases of single-use plastics in government supply chains.
The letter to the General Services Administration, which oversees government procurement, comes as that agency is considering writing new regulations directing federal agencies to cut back on single-use plastics.
The letter from the 58 lawmakers, led by Rep. Jared Huffmann, D-Calif., Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and others, tied the move to tackling the climate crisis.
A ‘robust’ plastics treaty push by governments, businesses at UN meeting
With the first round of negotiations for a global plastics pollution treaty starting later this year, advocates for a more robust agreement are using the U.N. General Assembly session in New York to try to steer the talks.
A coalition of consumer product makers, financial institutions and a few plastic firms, for example, issued a call Sept. 21 for the treaty to move away from fossil fuel-based plastics, cut back on single-use packaging and restrict materials they consider problematic for recycling or composting.
The group, the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, includes major plastic packaging makers like Amcor Ltd., Alpla Inc., Greiner AG and the Aptar Group Inc., along with resin maker Borealis AG.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is launching an $85 million campaign to try to block construction of more than 120 new petrochemical and plastics plants along the Gulf Coast and the Ohio River Valley and slow emissions from the industry.
A Sept. 21 announcement by Bloomberg Philanthropies, a foundation started by the billionaire owner of news company Bloomberg LP, said it will build on its previous Beyond Coal campaign that aimed to close coal plants and will support groups like Beyond Plastics and Rise St. James.
US plastics industry seeing steady growth
https://www.plasticsnews.com/news/us-plastics-industry-seeing-steady-growth
The U.S. plastics industry is expected to continue to grow in 2022 as it recovers from a pandemic-related decline in 2020.
U.S. plastics shipments are on track to grow 1.8 percent in 2022, according to Perc Pineda, chief economist with the Plastics Industry Association in Washington. Pineda spoke Sept. 14 during a webinar announcing the release of the association’s annual Size & Impact Report. Shipments grew 1.2 percent to $468 billion in 2021 after declining 0.9 percent in 2020.
The U.S. plastics industry also climbed from the country’s eighth largest industry in 2020 to No. six on that list in 2021, based on the value of shipments.
PureCycle faces opposition in Florida over recycling center
https://www.plasticsnews.com/news/purecycle-faces-opposition-florida-over-recycling-center
PureCycle Technologies Inc. is facing significant opposition to the company’s plans to operate a plastics sortation facility in a historically Black neighborhood in Winter Garden, Fla.
The company finds itself up against a community group named One Winter Garden, a coalition of environmental groups and the city itself.
PureCycle, which is nearing completion of its initial polypropylene recycling facility in Ironton, Ohio, also has plans for a similar facility in Augusta, Ga. The company wants to create a network of localized collection and sortation centers to capture used PP that would then be funneled to these two larger processing locations.
But plans for just such a location in an unincorporated area surrounded by Winter Garden are under fire.
Polymer Points: Commodity resin prices dropped in August

August saw price declines in all five major commodity resins in the North American market. Improving supplies, softening demand and feedstock trends were behind the price drops. Regional prices for all grades of polyethylene were down an average of 4 cents per pound, according to buyers contacted by Plastics News.
PE prices had declined by 3 cents in July after being flat in June. Prices for all grades of PE now are up a net of 1 cent so far in 2022.

Plastics Recyclers Europe: The circular economy for plastics is at risk
https://www.plasticsnews.com/news/plastics-recyclers-europe-circular-economy-plastics-risk
The soaring cost of energy on the European continent is increasingly impacting households and businesses across the board.
Now plastics recyclers are sounding their own alarm.
According to the pan-European association of European recyclers, Plastics Recyclers Europe, the high prices of electricity are starting to affect operations at Europe’s plastics recycling facilities, putting at risk the highly-touted transition towards circularity.
